Proliferating cell nuclear antigen signatures

Description

Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) [1,2] is a protein involved in DNA replication by acting as a cofactor for DNA polymerase delta, the polymerase responsible for lagging strand DNA replication.

A similar protein exists in yeast (gene POL30) [3] and is associated with polymerase III, the yeast analog of polymerase delta. In baculoviruses the ETL protein has been shown [4] to be highly related to PCNA and is probably associated with the viral encoded DNA polymerase. An homolog of PCNA is also found in archebacteria.

As signatures for this family of proteins, we selected a two conserved regions located in the N-terminal section. The second one has been proposed to bind DNA.
