Bacterial type II secretion system protein C signature


Description

The secretion pathway (GSP) for the export of proteins (also called the type II pathway) [1] requires a number of protein components. One of them is known as the 'C' protein and has been sequenced in a variety of bacteria such as Aeromonas (gene exeC); Erwinia (gene outC); Escherichia coli (gene yheE); Klebsiella pneumoniae (gene pulC); Pseudomonas aeruginosa (gene xcpS) or Vibrio cholerae (gene epsC).

The size of the 'C' protein is around 270 to 300 amino acids. It apparently contains a single transmembrane domain located in the N-terminal section. The short N-terminal domain is predicted to be cytoplasmic and the large C-terminal domain periplasmic. As a signature pattern, we selected a conserved region in the C-terminal part of these proteins.
